After the "one way" proposed in Ulm (car2go) and perhaps in Paris (Paris Autolib) advertise here, another perversion of carsharing.
the heart of this new approach, the company CityFlitz which, after Toronto and Vancouver, Montreal starts by offering a rental car for $ 1 per day since July 2009 (10 vehicles at launch). So far, nothing annoying. The arrival of a competitor Communauto , car-sharing company established since 1995, can help stimulate the market. But the very low price (it takes all of mêm add $ 7 monthly fees and gasoline that is not unlike conventional systems) hides a good idea objectionable.
Service is indeed almost exclusively funded by advertising, the same one that allowed Vélo'v, Velib, and other Bixi to emerge around the world. In the case of CityFlitz perversions of the model are pushed to the extreme : users must stay in town (so where public transport is efficient yet!) And in an area defined in advance to ensure visibility interesting advertisers. If they deviate from their path (marked by GPS), users will be fined $ 500!
addition, users must run at least 30 km in the day, always to ensure maximum visibility. And advertising would be seen on average 70 000 times a day. Visibility for which advertisers pay on average $ 3,000 per month. But this constraint for the user creates unnecessary travel or compete with alternative modes.
Among other constraints, subscribers can book one day at a time and then have to wait 48 hours before making a new reservation. Another problem, due to the extremely low price, demand is very strong. And you have to plan and book their trip about two weeks in advance! Not very flexible and not in the spirit of Parisian carsharing label (available 24/24, 80% of reservations made 24 hours in advance must be met).
In summary, compared to conventional car-sharing as Communauto CityFlitz creates visual pollution (increasing advertising everywhere ... is that what citizens want?), Air pollution (km unnecessary) is not very flexible use and the citizen loses the notion of cost of service with the consequences that go with it ("because the car is virtually free, take it all!"). A highly recommended! That's what makes the city of Montreal that could obstructing the service based on a regulation on the prohibition of advertising applied to trucks but not as apllications ruled unconstitutional in 2006 ... The end of history in the courts?
